Brief History and Lore

This formula predates the Shaolin Temple but it is at Shaolin where its current formulation and use was documented. The monks used it prior to tests of their progress, to prepare for combat and for other crucial situations. So, Tiger Fighting elixir is not a training or a development formula, it is an application formula.

Its name is significant in several ways.

First, it is a reference to one fighting like a tiger after taking the elixir, with the tiger symbolizing fierceness, courage, decisiveness, strength, power, and prowess.

A second reference is to the extremely difficult internal battle we all wage against ourselves and our ego. When practitioners of any spiritual discipline advance, gaining abilities and power, this can blind them to the pursuit of power and control over others and away from the peaceful, just, and compassionate way. The battle between the ego and the true self is like fighting a fierce tiger and the training to stay in the correct path was referred to as “subduing the tiger,” “taming the tiger,” “mounting the tiger,” and when successful, “riding the tiger.”

Finally, the name pays homage to Wu Song, a legendary martial artist from the Chinese epic tale, “The Water Margin.” Wu Song was renowned for his courage, honor and fighting ability which he used for just causes. He is the archetypical martial hero and an example of martial virtue. One of Wu Song’s adventures involves his encounter with a fearsome tiger. Wu Song does not run away, but fights and defeats the fierce tiger with his bare hands demonstrating the courage and sacrifice to fight the tiger and stop it from causing harm. From this comes the Chinese saying “Wu Song Da Fu” which translated literally means Wu Song hits/fights the Tiger but in China is a term used to describe a display of extraordinary courage.

As a final note, it is to be noted that for hundreds of years, different martial schools, families and lineages have called one of their advanced training exercises, Jit Fu or Fuk Fu, meaning Controlling, Blocking or Taming the Tiger, all related to this lore and to training to realize exceptional courage.
